Call-Me-Adam's review of A DOLL'S LIFE: the musical

Picture

"On Saturday, January 28, 2012, I took in The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective's well staged and acted Off-Broadway production of "A Doll's Life," one of the biggest flops in Broadway history. This production was not a flop by any means! Directed by Beautiful Soup's artistic director Steven Carl McCasland the young cast of actors were terrific, some with very big and powerful voices! Leading this cast was Mallory Berlin (Nora) who's acting skills were as fierce as her vocals."

NYTheatre.com review of A DOLL'S LIFE: the musical

"Steven Carl McCasland’s production for Beautiful Soup features passionate performances and impressive singing.... McCasland’s inventive and well-paced staging makes a lot out of very little; suitcases and trunks double as furniture, and a single door represents the inner and outer world. Kudos must be given to the full company for performing the first act—on Saturday, January 28—using only the house’s work lights after the board crashed right before the start of the performance. They soldiered on valiantly like it was nothing, and the problem was solved in time for the second act."

ALICE AU PAYS DES MERVEILLES reviewed by NYTheatre.com...

Picture
"The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective’s Alice is simple, fun and brimming with child-like excitement. Deftly adapted, directed and designed by artistic director Steven Carl McCasland, this Alice mostly hops along in a light, funny 55 minutes. The production is tight and polished, with the actors going from scene to scene and character to character with apparent ease and skill, guiding the audience effortlessly along their version of the kooky tale... and the hilarious Mallory Berlin, whose every exaggerated movement (as The Duchess and The Queen of Hearts) is a crystallization of comedic timing and characterization. Finally, at its core, Emily Floyd makes an effective, likable Alice."

Our Artistic Director interviewed at Adaumbelle's Quest...

Picture
"Who or what inspired you to become a performer? I'd started acting when I was 7, mourning over Eva Peron in community theater. But it wasn't until I was 17 and at the NY State Summer School of the Arts that I realized I wanted to write. We spent a day at the late Lanford Wilson's house in the Hamptons. I'd found myself in his very English garden analyzing BURN THIS with him. He hadn't changed out of his pajamas or shaven before we arrived and there was something very wonderful about it all: lounging all day, thinking up characters and situations in a house that reminded me so very much of the Talley home in FIFTH OF JULY. Then again, I'm writing my plays in a 4th-floor walkup in Astoria... "

OUT Magazine calls our artistic director a "need-to-know" entertainer on Popnography...

2011 marks the tenth anniversary year of the World Trade Center attacks. To honor the occasion, Steven Carl McCasland, founder and Artistic Director of The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective, is reviving the off-Broadway musical Crossing Brooklyn for a workshop production in New York City. Opening this week, the original musical features music by Larson Award-winner Jenny Giering and Book and Lyrics by Kleban Award-winner Laura Harrington.

Set in New York City in 2002, the play tells the story of Des and AJ, young, idealistic public school teachers bent on changing the world, one kid at a time. Life is full of promise and endless possibility until Des begins to unravel under the weight of her fears ignited that fateful September day. Splitting apart under the strain, Des and AJ struggle to find their way back to each other. Giering and Harrington's musical premiered at Manhattan’s The Transport Group in 2007.

We recent sat down with the 24-year-old, openly gay McCasland to talk about the production. Read the interview here.
